Kids skipping class, criminal extortion, Uncle Policeman, demon cows and magical magpieswhat s not to love This is the last of the level one Chinese breeze books I bought I didn t buy it to start with because it had such a stupid English title Books about little kids No thank you Then I noticed that on the cover it had the Cowherd and Weaving Maid and I thought perhaps this would have a nice old story in it I m very glad I did get it as it easily tied as my favourite of the grade one readers. The story starts with two missing kids and the parents search for them They talk to the police, their are calls from kidnappers, it s all quite tense for 300 words The second part of the book is finding the children who ve decided they need to take an airplane to visit the Cowherd and Weaving maid and tell of the Empress of Heaven for seperating them The kids reason is kinda silly But there is a nice retelling of the story of Cowherd and Weaving Maid in two of the chapters, it s a different version that I ve heard before and seems like
Really great story I was worried it would be childish because of the book title and the main characters being children, but I was very pleasantly surprised and delighted The story is engaging and fun It is about two young children that go missing after they are supposed to go to English class The first half is a bit suspenseful and follows the parents side of the story The second half shows the reason the children have gone missing and includes a super delightful fairy tale I ve been reading these on my kindle app and one thing I love is that when I come across an unfamiliar word I can look it up in my Chinese dictionary functions the same as English dictionary just entirely in Chinese or I can swipe to the built in translation app and see a defi
Such a great twist in the plot Such a great way to teach a traditional Chinese story using a modern plot line Loved this book.I too had avoided this book because it looked babyish and low level But it s intense Loved it Another good graded reader, great for increasing reading fluency My minor irritation with this series is that the footnote numbers for new vocabulary often split a two character word or compound, making it harder as a beginner to recognize them as a single unit. Really enjoyable Chinese story about 2 children missing Good read for when you just start learning Chinese Also this book tells an old Chinese story of a day that is celebrated in China on the 11th of August.
