Edgar Allan Poe is best known for the Ravenstill the greatest and most famous American poem ever writtenin my opinionInventor of the detective story master of the short story especially the macabre writereditor criticessayistgamblerbeggar drunkdrug userwidower and manic depressiveIn other words an American original Poe's only novelin 1838 The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket is included in this bookYoung Pym befriends Augustus the son of a sea captain Wanting adventure this teenager has his friend stow him away in his father's shipBut something goes wrong After many days hidden and starvingArthur leaves his secret place and discovers there has been a mutiny on boardLuckily Augustus is still alive and gives his friend food and waterThe mutineers have a power struggle on ship causing much turmoilWhen a hurricane hitsmost of the drunken crew perish with the vessel capsizingThe survivors cling to the bottom of the shipfor their lives which is now the top Finally picked up after many days at sea by the Jane Guy and landing in Africa Later they go to the Antarctic and Arthur Pym disappears in that vast lonely cold landWill he ever be seen again? Some of my very favorite poems Can be very dark and depressing by so deep and meaningful My first real book When I was 15 I lived with my grandparents for a yearlong twisted story my grandmother insisted that I read and read well to acuire a decent education I told her reading was boring and I just didn't get why people wasted time reading She laughed and showed up a couple of days later with this book for me I was horrified at the size of italmost 1200 pages Much to my amazement and her amusement I loved it And still have the original copy she gave me Thanks Grandma It was uite an undertaking to complete but I am glad that I did In middle and high school literature classes I always loved the romantic era because inevitably we got to read something by Poe It was a nice refresher to reread many of his classic stories but also to experience some of his lesser known stories most of which are eually compelling and entertaining Just a seasonal reread
