the reins all the way through and the result is a pacy, excellently written novel that draws the reader in and leaves them breathless throughout The quality of the writing in the book is top notch and the author has obviously been doing her history homework the narrative is dotted with period details that don t get in the way, but instead add to the authenticity of the time period The romance between Anne and Simon is very well handled and packed with conflict The author weaves her story so well that none of it is predictable and as a result the reader is never quite sure where it will end Plenty of twists, mysteries and surprises keep the reader guessing throughout and add bucketloads of suspense to the storyline.Nicola also uses the book to examine the conflicts brought about by the onset of the war, looking at the ways in which loyalties and close relationships were torn apart by the division of the country s allegiance Lord Greville s Captive has plenty to say about this period of history and by the time the book finishes, the reader feels like they have really learnt something about what it was like to have been alive during this period, as well as having followed the central characters through their turbulent relationship and shared it with them every step of the way For this reason the book deserves the highest accolades Anne Grafton or Anne of Grafton is a martyr She takes on too much without any thought for herself Sometimes I don t know if she s brave or just stupid She s too wrapped up in her cause that she deluded herself into thinking that the only way forward is not to look back Simon Greville is as blind as Anne The only difference between them is that Simon knows and acknowledges what s between them Enemy or not, Simon has the conscience not to change her.Anne and Simon s story is delicate and c Anne Grafton or Anne of Grafton is a martyr She takes on too much without any thought for herself Sometimes I don t know if she s brave or just that Simon knows and acknowledges what s between them Enemy or not, Simon has the conscience not to change her.Anne and Simon s story is delicate and complicated Their situation happens to everybody Couples often have disputes about different beliefs, sometimes it s resolved peacefully but often it creates gaps Sometimes one bends to the will of the other, other times they stay on different sides It s all about compromise Still, it s easier said than done It s not easy giving up ideals that you think is right It s like cutting off a part of yourself and you know you ll never be whole again.Anne and Simon tried to bridge that gap but they first had to do it the wrong way There was only half a compromise which left a rift between them From the beginning trust was scarce Simon and Anne loved each other but they never trusted each other They never allowed the other too close for fear of deception But when it really mattered, all they have is each other and both did not fail the other It was not an easy journey but they moved on I liked this one quite a lot, particularly because Cornick branched out of her usual Regency era and wrote about a period that I m interested in I was a little unhappy with the heroine for being too much of a doormat for the hero view spoiler Seriously, he uses her father s wake to try to force her to marry him When she finally does marry him, a great job of getting me on the heroine s side, but I would ve liked to see the guy grovel pretty seriously before the HEA Cativa da Paix o Nicola CornickS culo XVII Inglaterra H Hist ricos 482008 Do
