This book met all my basic criteria for a great rating It kept me up after my bedtime with lots of unforeseen twists and turns Reed Malloy love the name is a mouth watering hero who appealed from the get go The heroine is spunky outspoken talented and yet lonely inhibited and unsure In other words genuine The steamy passion that springs between the two is well steamyI don’t normally read historicals set in America but I enjoyed learning about Boston and Colorado; the author brought the settings to lifeCan’t wait to read book 2 of the series I won this book from a first reads giveaway so I’m going to be completely honest Well I pretty much loved Charlotte from the very beginning I liked how she wasn’t a conventional romance heroine She had substance to her than fawning over parties and pretty clothes When Reed showed up at her house she was anything but the doting aunt to her niece and nephew But you never thought she was a bitch or a coldhearted person Her reactions to the things that happened in the book felt very real There were moments that she made rash judgments or did something stupid but she could admit when she messed up It was nice to read about a heroine that had self respect and who wasn’t willing to settle for a loveless relationship My problem lay with Reed As a love interest he didn’t really grab my attention It made me laugh how he was always fixing Charlotte with disapproving glances when they first met However as the book went on I felt like he was a bit bipolar One minute he was glaring at her and then the next he was smiling genuinely at her It made me fairly confused and I just didn’t get his character Also there were times that he was kind of odd He would say certain things that were meant to sound sexy but they’d come off as awkward To be honest I was actually rooting for Jason the majority of the book The minute he stepped on the page I was won over He was so charming and I liked his shameless flirting I ended up wanting Charlotte to fall for him instead of Reed Of course he view spoilerended up being a psychomurderer so that kind of put a damper on things hide spoiler Charlotte is a writing under the pen name Charlie Sanborn living in rural Colorado She’s come to appreciate the single solitude that has surrounded her Then suddenly a knock on the door changed everything Mr Reed Malloy appears on her doorstep with two children in tow It turns out that the children are that of her deceased cousin whose last will testament contained instructions for Charlotte to raise them Lily and Thomas have now lost both parents been hauled halfway across the country and are being dropped on the doorstep of a women who has no intention of letting them stayIt’s not the proper thing to do but Reed stays in the home of a single women but there are few options with Charlotte not willing to take them and Reed not willing to disregard Ann’s will It doesn’t take long for this unconventional arrangement to prove to be both convenient and comfortable It also awakens emotions in both Charlotte and Reed for very different reasons When Reed’s Boston life catches up with him in Colorado it doesn’t take long for things to become very complicated Reed ends up going back to Boston and Charlotte and the children stay in ColoradoThis is far from the end of Reed and Charlotte’s story though The children’s grandmother uestions Charlotte’s suitability as guardian Convincing Charlotte to bring her and the children back to Boston Secretly Charlotte is excited at the possibility of rekindling with Reed but also knows that there are really big risk to those possibilities Charlotte and Reed have to walk a fine balance between desire and public appearance with plenty of people trying to drive wedges into the middle of it allThis book is uite long and I typically I don’t read historical romance although I did enjoy this book Enough so that I’m definitely considering continuing the series I struggled with the speed of the story but that had a lot to do with the genre classification I had to find some patience to deal with the pomp and circumstance or even the formality that was needed to deal with the time period The characters were engaging and well developed In this well written and suspenseful romance I found the plot to be engaging and was unable to put the book down From the very first academic writer lady Charlotte drew me in Her absent mindedness and lack of domestic skills were unusual for her time but she had the respect of many readers across the country When literary admirer Reed decides to meet the writer lady by bringing her deceased cousin's children to her in accordance with her will he did not expect to see a young and very beautiful woman Reed decides there and then to stay until such time as Charlotte agrees to become the caregiver to the children Things don't work out the way either of them planned and ultimately naive Charlotte finds herself thrust into the sophisticated and somewhat jaded Boston society with its gossip and sharp tongues I loved Reed's character his caring for the children and Charlotte as well as his gentle approach towards them Charlotte was floundering in Boston society but she uickly finds her feet and is able to make a stand winning Reed's respect I previously read this book as part of a box set and enjoyed it just as much the second time around I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review Delightful storyWhat a great story there were beautiful children handsome dude lovely lady bad guy good guy and she had a job Scandalous But really it was such a feel good story for my keeper shelf Great story lineI enjoyed this book very much The story line was interesting and the characters are really awesome Looking forward to reading the next book in this series An Improper Situation by Sydney Jane BailyhttpwwwImproper Situat With her chestnut hair and striking green eyes Charlotte should be the catch of Spring City Colorado But she wears her independence like an impenetrable suit of armor and cloaks her identity behind her famed writing nom de plume of Charles Sanborn She's a 24 year old confirmed spinster who won't risk heartbreak until a handsome stranger awakens her yearning both for companionship and for indulgent pleasure Boston lawyer Reed Malloy has a solemn mission to deliver two orphaned children to their Colorado cousin He's not prepared for Charlotte being utterly innocent and yet irresistibly beguiling or for her brewing resentment and flat out refusal to raise her kin It will take some firsthand persuasion if he is to complete his legal duty and perhaps resolve tantalizing issues When Charlotte forsakes everything familiar and two thousand miles of America's heartland no longer separate her from Reed unforeseen influences conspire to keep them apart The high society of the Boston Brahmins welcomes her while concealed malice abounds With the intrusion of sinister forces and scorned women and with passions ablaze Reed and Charlotte find themselves in a very Improper SituationSydney Jane Baily’s debut novel An Improper Situation doesn’t read like an author’s first published work I had thought that I would be stumbling through at some awkwardness and wordy descriptions as I have in the past while reading established authors’ early works but was I surprised when this wasn’t the case Ms Baily was elouent in weaving her story together and I have to say that I am barely containing myself in jumping right into her second novel An Irresistible Temptation but thought I should get down my thoughts on her first book before I confuse myself on details An Improper Situation begins with Charlotte Sanborn renowned writer Charles Sanborn attempting to finish an article on farmers with a looming deadline when the rumbling of a carriage distracts her Then a resounding knock on the door changes her life forever On the doorstep are two children and a devastatingly handsome man Turns out that her cousin Ann had passed and left her children in Charlotte’s care The tall dark and handsome stranger Reed Malloy is her cousin’s lawyer who traveled with the children to ensure their proper care Charlotte who is the definition of a hermit flat out refuses She has no idea how to raise children Her cupboards are bare and there is a fine layer of dust on almost every surface The stairs are in disrepair and there are holes in her floor It looks like she can barely fend for herself so how in the world is she going to care for two children? Her adamant refusal is the last thing Reed had thought to hear but he insists anyway and ends up staying That’s where things start to get interestingThe tale of Charlotte and Reed begins in mutual bafflement but through shared interests their lives begin to intertwine and are irrevocably changed forever I could not put this book down I have to admit that in the beginning chapters I did think to myself “Boy this girl doesn’t like children AT ALL” and had a hard time trying to read it since I LOVE children and can’t imagine not liking them but I continued reading and I am absolutely overjoyed that I did There’s intrigue suspense humor and steam I’m greatly looking forward to reading her next novel in the Sanborn Malloy series An Irresistible Temptation This book by Ms Sydney Jane Baily was a complete surprise and totally was a joy to read I know that’s silly to say considering how many books I read from so many different genres plus when I started the book I didn’t like the time setting which despite buying several books in this setting I thought I would get bored and stop reading it so I felt at first that I wasn’t going to like the book What kept me reading was not only the fully developed three dimensional characters which I will get to in a moment but the refreshingly intricate deftness of Ms Baily’s wonderful writing in weaving such a wonderful story that I was instantly charmed and captivated that I could barely put the book down I was glad that despite the slow start the story did not drag and was uite a page turnerCharlotte Sanborn a writer lives alone a uiet almost hermit like life in Spring City Colorado Spring City is a tiny town which is pretty much disrupted with the appearance of her deceased cousin’s two kids Lily Tomas and the very handsome lawyer Reed Malloy accompanying them both agreeing to stay with Charlotte to make sure Charlotte is suitable to continue to be the children’s guardian As Charlotte observes Reed dealing with the children and he continues to stay in her house Charlotte can’t ignore the growing physical attraction or love she has for Reed which he also has for her too While living almost an idyllic perfect life Charlotte and Reed along with the kids appears as though nothing can ruin this until Reed’s partner and associate John Trelaine and Reed’s fiancée Helen Belgrave arrive in Spring City tooI immediately liked Reed yes sure he was handsome but there was so many sides to him He loved children knew how to play get under Charlotte’s stiff no nonsense façade and loosen her up Plus he was smart cryptic and just adorable As the book progressed I did want to shake him or make him talk to his sister’s just so he could express his feelings openly yes he thinks he knows women obviously he finds he doesn’t since he makes demands from Charlotte how can he be so intelligent yet so dim witted ponders Charlotte which I began to wonder myself too I wondered why Reed kept stringing Helen along even though I didn’t like her I wondered what happened to her I also liked Charlotte she at first seemed like such a stick in the mud but with Reed’s help really learned how to let her hair down She was smart capable feisty loyal and loving She knew how to stand up for herself even though everyone that she was close to did not have her best interests at heart and had an ulterior motive or plans to hurt her whether emotionally or physically I wanted a good ending for John Trelaine and Charlotte’s brother Thaddeus what happens to them I do hope Ms Baily will write about them if they happen to have a story I can’t wait to read the rest in this wonderful series and this wonderful new to me author I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review I don't know I couldn't really get into this book no matter how much I tried The heroin is uite funny and I liked her as a character in the beginning but then she gets dull Her hero wasn't really hero for me and I couldn't really grasp him and feel for him and the kids well I didn't really like that the kids was there even if it helped Charlotte to open up The children where a distraction and I can't imagine children acting like they did not today and not in a historical fiction The Charlotte got involved with the children and the she got romantically involved the dull she became In the beginning she refused to live a life that was expected of a woman and I like the rebel Charlotte and that she wanted to break the bonds and then she just switched and went into the mouldIt took me forever to read this book and I normally like historical romance book I don't know why I didn't get into this one I just didn't and got bored very uickly The writing is overall good but the language was uestionable from time to time It never got that historical feeling into it than how they dressed talked and the surroundings The language was to modern and they spoke to modern I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest reviewThis book was very unexpected I thought it would be a simple historical romance and it was so much At first I thought the book just seemed to go on and on and on but then there was so much of the story in a good way When I was about halfway I did not want to put it down I kept thinking what else is going to happen to Reed and Charlotte Charlotte lives a uiet simple life in Spring City Colorado when Reed Malloy knocks on her door Charlotte's cousin has died and left her two children to Charlotte Children will not fit into her uiet life so Reed stays to make sure the children will be taken care of Of course sparks fly between Reed and Charlotte Unfortunately the children's grandmother in Boston has decided she also needs to make sure the children will be well taken care of so then they are off to Boston with many twists and turns This really was a page turner
