Don’t judge a book by its titleor dothat’s why I picked it up to read Something VERY different and off course for me to read but worth the change Sexcapades and shenanigans from the POV of a male nymphomaniac I didn’t really know what to expect when I began to read this “story” It centers around Dave and his love for women sex and his never ending mission to get his dick wet Written in the form of journal entries he takes the reader on a real life ride with his women his Bros alcohol drugs his insecurities with relationships and commitment his personal demons his reality and growing up It’s a journey to find that “” that everyone is looking for but don’t know that they want or need but in all the wrong places It’s a never ending twisted look into this mans perverse mindI thoroughly enjoyed reading this book It was engaging funny and completely REAL I could not put it downalthough my stride was broken on occasiondistractions distractionsThe writing is real raw vulgar and brilliant I laughed oh godthe cotton swabbahahahaha I gasped I yelled WTF? and then I got mad when it endedgood thing for the seuel Don't make assumptions of the books titleI am going to be honest Yes I read this book for the name alone Sue melolBut to be honest I absolutely loved this book I was sucked in from the beginning and could not put it downThis is a diary of a nymphomaniacTo me this was REAL LIFE SHITAnyone could relate to this book man or women It is RAW and so many EMOTIONS flow through you while readingI can not remember when I laughed so hard while reading a book Matthes writing is real and raw and it captivated me from the start You will think and you will uestion yourself along the wayAND HOLY SHIT BALLS THE SEXLOTS AND LOTS OF SEXI DID MENTION SEX RIGHT?This is one book that stands out from the rest in my opinionA MUST READ Brilliantly written and artfully compiled Dave Matthes narrates his tale of love lust and just life in its raw and true form This uniue and slightly twisted love saga is a never ending conflict of a mans intangible internal desires and his insatiable libido Every chapter leaves you wanting and asking Will he find the love he craves or perhaps just a never ending trail of moist vaginas I found the story and its characters to be enveloping in an infectious way and the writing nothing short of honest I just could NOT put this book down Asshole DickSociopathFuckerWomanizerSlutDouche bagPossible personality disorder Narcissistic AddictDamagedIntellectualPoetRomanticComedicHonest HeartbreakingWeirdGenuineGood This is how I would describe my sweet diary boy from this book I have to believe there was a little fate involved for me to be introduced to such an extraordinary story Who would've thought that a simple GoodReads buddy reuest would lead me to a fantastic novel affair and a probable newfriend My sweet diary boy is a pretty disgusting excuse for a human being He drinks far too much whiskey has a lot of sex with a plethora of uestionable cunts and tells some exceptionally raunchy jokes He's disrespectful to everyone around him including himself His ambivalence towards life in general is something that and hack psychologist would have a field day with There is a special place in Hell for people like him Special like roll out the red carpets line it with golden velvet ropes and open up the corner office place in Hell Devil meet Dave Dave meet Devil You are going to do great things down here And then as I continued my journey through his convoluted thoughts I was introduced to a pretty awesome and genuine young adult One that in his own fucked up mind was just trying to find his path to live through heart break in the best way he knew how Sure his way was full of degrading remarks and a slew of bad decisions But I totally respect the honesty of it all People always say that they want honesty in all aspects of life until they are confronted with it Then the honesty becomes an asshole that is abhorrently offensive I for one find brutal truthfulness to be a very attractive uality And that is why I love everything this book stands for Even though at some points it was uncomfortable and at others it was just plain gross there was a refreshing realness to his thoughts that made me all warm and fuzzy inside It was pathetic and endearing And I wouldn't give up the last four days for all of the rainbows and unicorns in the world And now for some notes No Kindle this time Only yellow post it onesmost of my friends from high school had shown up completely bald Why do 17 year old boys feel the need to do this? I had a bunch of friends pull this shit and it pissed their poor mothers off to no end Mostly because senior pictures were just around the corner and these women would still have to dole out hundreds of dollars in spite of their sons appearance I was once convinced to shave my head But at least I waited until no one cared about what I looked like any you say 'potato' and I say 'slice open that hot bitch and let me butter the shit out of it' Oh come on A potato? bed to nap in And I wouldn't have it any other way I begrudgingly gave this 5 stars because although I appreciated it I didn't like it much in the way that you'd appreciate a piece of art but wouldn't want it hanging over your fireplace Matthes may well be the Hunter S Thompson of his generation a brilliant writer with an elegiac way with words beset by demons that make it impossible to like him love him or respect him However his story is too compelling to uit reading it A misogynist a racist and drowning in his own self hatred he is a train wreck from which you cannot take your eyes In this autobiographical rant from a night baker cum writer pun intended we are drawn into a world fueled by alcohol drugs and meaningless sexually promiscuous encounters with any hole he can find to poke his perpetually horny protuberance into a world devoid of meaning relationships or love Like attracts like; his women are as damaged as he Though he professes to love his mother any semblance of normalcy in his life ended when he was 17 and his father died unexpectedly and suddenly of a massive coronary In some places flickers of normalcy appear the real and very deep love and respect he has for his sister his affection for his ancient dog The Boobs with her permanently off balanced head but Matthes immediately hides those with another round of indiscriminate sexual encounters with another lying sack of crap woman or two The dog's head is off balance from physical trauma while Matthes' is from emotional damage; the dog mirrors Matthes Matthes believes that he has friends but to his reader the Bros his close group of 25 guy pals seem to be cut from the same moth garbage and feces ridden fabric as he a new generation of self loathing hedonists seeking meaning in places where they will never find it Dismissive of love commitment relationships and normalcy he is still pedestrian enough to long for them in a secret corner of his soul He longs for them yet does everything humanly possible to make them inaccessible to him creating a self fulfilled prophecy of emptiness obliterated by sex drugs and a little rock and roll Repugnant terribly sad insane and bitter Matthes is undeniably talented Unlikely to live to a ripe old age his written legacy will likely gain a cult following Hunter S Thompson may have had Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but Matthes makes it a road show carrying with him everywhere he goes Okay here goesUpon viewing the title you may think this is some book about the degradation of women by a man who believes he has all the answers with an aura of testerone fueled bravado You'd either be offended and stay away from this book or enthralledlike I was and dive right in But youas I was would be wrong okay not completely wrong it does degrade very many women it's vulgar and full of bravado but the author has much uestions about himself than answers and this book seems to be an attempt at an answer in of itselfThe Slut Always Rides Shotgun by Dave Matthes at least what I got out it is a tale of a young man's somewhat messed up life and psyche It's his journey to find completion and looking in or less all the wrong places He hopes to have what constantly eludes him while at the same time trying to accept reality All the while he's sinking into a deeper and deeper abyss before hitting rock bottom and then coming out of it completeto a degreeYes this book features many sexual escapades with many different partners and usually those partners end up being written about in a less than positive light Yes it is full of many adventures that morons in their early 20s would endure But all in all it's about trying to keep one's sanity in an insane world even if one already admits he's insaneThat's really the best plot synopsys I can give without giving the book away Fact is there are many stories in this book that seem to lead up to the one pivotal moment in the end and I don't want to spoil any one of themI enjoyed it very much The stories I found were very funny engaging and at some times to steal a phrase describing a movie had me at the edge of my seat The amount of detail that Dave goes into describing his escapades had me sometimes in stitches or completely grossed out but that's the nature of the beast Dave holds nothing back And all the whilepurposely or not he inserts many nuggets of wisdom that alot of us should live by men women all of us though I do admit those nuggets of wisdom reek of testosteroneI say get past the title and give this book a read it's a hell of alot deeper than the title would suggest Suffering from a major book hangover I couldn't find anything that grabbed my attention I would start with one read a few lines toss it to the side and start on the next one Browsing on Facebook I saw this book pop up on my news feed and immediately I was intrigued Who wouldn't be with a title “The Slut Always Rides Shotgun”I have to admit at the beginning of this book I was an emotional mess because it felt like I was reading my own diary The pain you feel of losing a loved one so close is indescribable I lost my mother at the age of 25 and about half way through the book I lost my grandfather It brought back a lot of painful memories “Don’t ever let anyone decide your emotions for you If you have a problem solve it yourself while relying on others as little as possible It’ll build character and in the end you’ll have a nearly unbreakable sense of self reliance” I kept reading and there were countless times I was laughing hysterically particularly the scene at the Free Clinic with Mrs Butterworth I will never look at a Tip the same way ever again HA HASome may not agree with the choices made in the book but who are they to judge what’s right from wrong when you should live your life and do whatever the hell makes you happy and if it’s a mistake you’ll learn from it No one is perfect It’s the choices in life that make us who we are today “We all have some fucked up shit about ourselves and the only way to understand it is to accept the fact that we’re all people and no one is “normal” no matter how hard they try to conform to the generational moment And while we may have friends and family in our lives who clearly care about us and want nothing than to help us the one person the ONLY person who can change the darkness into light is our own goddamned selves”The one thing I love the most is when you come across a book that brings a variety of emotions crying laughing makes you think uestion yourself and saying WTF did that just happen even the parts so deep you can’t understand Oh and lots of sex It's these books that standout than the rest and the ones you remember the most If you’re looking for this book THIS IS IT A glimpse into a period in Matthes' life this book is entirely relatable to those of us who have ever chased the bottom of a bottle while intense sweaty orgasms were the most authentic form of human connection we could stomach A heady trip down the proverbial rabbit hole The Slut Always Rides Shotgun follows our Jameson soaked protagonist through a debauchery laden time in his life where promiscuity is the norm and the biggest enemy he faces is himself On the surface Matthes could be mistaken for an incorrigible schmuck who shows little regard for the thoughts or feelings of those around him most specifically the women he beds and there were many many women Digging deeper the reader is shown glimpses of an individual who is in a perpetual state of contemplation surrounding his relationships and interactions with others His unwavering loyalty to his best friend who is a character in his own right and his affection for his tumor afflicted canine companion makes it a little easier to discern where the depravity ends and the humanity beginsMatthes proves to be a kindred spirit to anyone who has ever been irrevocably changed by loss or pain and struggled to find their way back especially those of us who have done so by committing a multitude of sins along the way As one who has patched together her own island of misfit degenerate toys with hearts of gold I found Matthes' cast of characters fascinatingly similar to those I spent my late teens and early twenties wasting time brain cells and orgasms with The stories in The Slut Always Rides Shotgun are nothing if not honest up to and including the freuent sexual encounters the feelings they created and the occasionally disastrous results they yielded Fueled by Jameson hallucinogenics and momentous attempts to distinguish the meaning of emotions ranging from lust and love to apathy and indifference Matthes' story leaves the reader wanting wondering what happened to the only woman that was a constant presence in his heart mind and bed and whether or not he made it back from his roadtrip in time to work An entertaining thought provoking read for anyone who has ever blurred the lines between sex love and self loathing The story is presented to us as an autobiographical diary of a nymphomaniac We're led through choice events of his life most of them centering around his lifestyle of high risk sexual encountersThemes of friendships family romance growing up etc are prominent beneath all the sex talk so even if you don't have a crazy lifestyle you can still find something to relate to in this story I found this a compelling read just for all the hijinks and fights the main character gets into Sometimes likeable but often someone you might find pleasure in seeing in these curious bad predicaments the narrator is a cheerfully honest read blunt fellow who doesn't splice his words or thoughts The characters he deals with are no less a collection of weirdos nymphos and party boysThe descriptions take on a gleefully obscene uality with lots of comparisons to sex acts and genitalia Dave Matthes' taste for sentence construction is uniue and something that added a lot of flavor to the story Some parts flow beautifully in a stream of consciousness style as he jumps around between metaphors and events This novel is definitely obscene without really feeling offensive There are are lot of ellipses but that's of a personal nitpick and is probably a side effect of the less than formal writing style When I picked up this book I thought it was going to be a funny memoir of a guy with a colorful past of good and bad experiences that eventually shaped the mature man he had become Well that was about as far away from what I got as imaginable The book begins with what he describes as an authors rant and that rant goes on until the very last page It is basically a collection of disjointed thoughts that I can only imagine were scribbled on rolling papers or the inside of beer bottle wrappers about the authors sexcapades and drug induced suicide attempts Unfortunately it wasn't even funny He seems very angry and so while I kept waiting for nuggets of hilarity or situations that I could at least smile aboutnone ever came It was literally page after page of bitching about his life and the people in it I think this is one of those books that was written as a therapeutic exercise for the author and not meant to impart any wisdom or entertainment to the reader
