RATING 45 STARS Perception is book three in the Eve series by AL Waddington Can you imagine going through life as a normal almost eighteen year old teenager starting your senior year but in a matter of weeks your entire life and everything you have thought you understood has changed? This is the circumstances Jocelyn Timmons has found herself in In the first two books of this series she discovers that she has inherited EVE Essence Voyager Era from her Uncle She is existing on two different planes of existence at the same time The current date is Thanksgiving November 26 2009 But her “other” life is in 1878 In the first two books she has trouble accepting this in both of her lives But I really like how Jocelyn has grown in this third book She is stronger and stands up for herself She still hasn’t decided if this is a gift or a curse But she is willing to accept her circumstances as her barriers continue to crumble in both her lives In 2009 Jocelyn has just met Jackson Chandler her now fiancé But in 1878 they have been sweethearts all her life But as far as Jocelyn’s family knows she has only known Jackson for a matter of weeks when they became engaged By now Jocelyn has turned 18 so legally her parents have no say But still as a parent I can understand their concerns since they have no idea that the “other” Jocelyn has known Jackson for so much longer Still the way that her mother and brother Ethan reacted and the way they treated her I simply can’t excuse To be angry is one thing but to completely cut off your child never speak to her don’t stay in the room with her for week after week I just can’t condone We are supposed to love our children unconditionally Not to love them only if they adhere to the life plan we have for them I have to say though that her father was her rock of support He hung in there stuck as he was between his daughter and his wife and supported her as best he could “We actually get to experience the best of both worlds in one lifetime This gift or curse whichever you believe it to be gives us a rare opportunity to really have it all” The differences in both of Jocelyn’s lives is astounding In 1878 of course there is no technology no cars Medical science is so far removed from what we know today But the families are so much closer The love and support she experiences is so comforting In 2009 she has cars cell phones computers and all life’s fun toys But her family is not close They don’t eat together or talk Thank goodness she has Jackson’s family to go to for support and to help her as her barriers continue to crumble “As I have told you before my love regardless of what time we are in you may take full comfort in knowing that you are always my Jocelyn” We all wish that we get to experience true love that once in a lifetime soul mate But to have him twice in both her lives is than anyone could hope or wish for Jackson is her love and her life In 1878 it is accepted that couples marry young But not so much in current times I loved that we got to experience Jocelyn and Jackson’s wedding in both times And both brought tears to my eyes Both were beautiful in their different ways “All I wanted all I would ever want was right here in my arms Nothing else in the world existed but the two of us” I really enjoyed this book and the continuation of Jocelyn and Jackson’s story The entire book happens between Thanksgiving and January 5 They have gone through so much to overcome all they have been dealt so far I can’t wait to see what is in store for them next in the fourth and final book Illumination due out in April of next year Thank you so much to AL Waddington for giving me the opportunity to read this book I really did enjoy it and can’t wait to see what happens next If you've been following me for a long time you'll know that it's no secret that I can't get enough of this series I think it's my favourite YA series of all time and it definitely deserves that title Firstly how gorgeous is that cover? I'm considering asking for all of the novels in paperback for Christmas but they're uite expensive in the UK so I might have to save up for them myself The covers have all been beautiful but this one is just next levelThe characters are always developing and I love that it makes them real I'm so involved with these characters at this point and the fact they keep growing keeps me interested Their relationships are really changing in this novel and it's kept me on edge the entire time especially Jocelyn's relationship with her 2009 mother Amy which is getting and tense as the novel has went on A pleasant development has been Jocelyn's relationship with her 2009 sister Sidney I've really loved getting to know her and I hope that in future books she'll appear especially because of her own character development and her own plot twist so excitingThis novel to me is a bit darker than the other ones in terms of heavy things happening Jocelyn's 2009 mother Amy has become incredibly hostile to the point of cruelty her 2009 brother Ethan has followed his mothers lead and at home her only support is her father Shane until the end of the novel and when she's visiting her sister Sidney I personally thought I'd find this hard to relate to because I have a good relationship with my parents but the writing of this novel made it very easy to put myself in Jocelyn's place This novel introduces us to a new character Uncle Nicholas I hope we get to hear about him as he is an incredibly interesting writer and I feel he will be incredibly useful to Jocelyn in the future and possibly to Sidney as well I hope we get to see him with Shane his estranged brother as I feel that exchange would be incredibly interestingThere are a lot of twists in this novel that it was almost impossible the write a review without spoilersI rated this book 4 stars on GoodreadsI was given this book in exchange for a review All thoughts are my own and are in no way affected by the author or publisher Originally published on I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange of an honest reviewThis was a pretty good book I enjoyed reading up on Jocelyn and Jackson Their lives are so connected and intertwined that I simply adore their relationship AL Waddington has created such a profound world or rather worlds in 2009 and 1878 She has taken two eras and meshed them so seamlessly that it flows easily and doesn't confuse me as a readerJocelyn has grown so much since the first two books She is bit outspoken and stands up for herself against her mother brother and those who don't understand her life She begins to fully understand EVE a bit and just embraces it In both 2009 and 1878 she loves to learn and her education seems to be a priority for her Not to mention she is an awesome friendJackson is still the perfect gentleman I love him He always knows how to speak to people His love for Jocelyn in both 2009 and 1878 is something every girl dreams for He is always by her side he stands up for her he always comforts her and makes her feel loved in many ways I love JacksonI was happy about the surprise Jackson did for Jocelyn in Boston He and his family are definitely amazing because they always try to make her comfortable and feel loved Even learning about her uncle Nicholas I'm excited that she has a better family to look to her love support and laughterI can't believe that Sidney could possibly have inherited EVE too I need to know I still don't like Jocelyn's mother or Ethan they are major asses Her friends shocked me too except for Caitlyn I hope things look up for her in the last book IlluminationPS all the book covers are freaking beautiful I so didn't want this book to end There are so many things that I want to discuss but I am not going to do that because it will give it away Nineteenth century Jocelyn has been slowly seeing everything that is going on in 2009 She can feel when she is upset or is hurting In this book trust is tried and bonds between friends are pushed Jackson and Jocelyn are perfect together When they are apart they are miserable Jocelyn meets her Uncle Nicholas and learns that he too has EVE She is excited about this There is now someone she can talk to about it in 2009 and in the nineteenth century There is also a development that is happening in 2009 with her sister She is starting to show signs of something that can't be explained I know that this is short but I can't give away anything And I can't wait for the next book to come out I need to know how everything turns out with her family I loved this book which isn't much of a surprise since I love the whole series so far With each new part of the story unfolding it becomes impossible to put down I highly recommend this series to anyone and everyone and can't wait for the next book to come out I have been sent copies of all of the books from the series up to now by publicists and have been liking them less and less as I go along The original premise of people leading two different lives at different times was so intriguing that I kept reading hoping that the story would utilize this uniue premise to create a kick butt story but three books in I think that ship has finally sailedThere are just so many things that have fallen short in this series for me so I will try to string my issues together somewhat coherently and try not to rant I have hopes for the first less for the latterHere it goesOne thing that bugged me about this story from the beginning was how much Waddington romanticizes back then The two times that the characters are living in are present day and the late nineteenth century and while this book did address social issues of that time it romanticized that era as much in my opinion than it criticized it Present day Jocelyn praises the family values of back then and laments of how much we have lost but this is mostly because her present day family is particularly messed up and her back then family is particularly close and put together Its true that as the veil between the two times comes down and both Jocelyns remember each other the back then Jocelyn gets upset that her family does not support her in going to college but that's really the biggest one She's not upset that she can't vote She's not upset that she will have to depend on Jackson modern and supportive he may claim to bethough he comes off as pretty patriarchal to me for the rest of her life Also the only time she gets upset about the plight of her life back then is when it affects her specifically I know if I were transported back then I might have fun winning bets on who the next president will be or visiting my favorite late authors but I know seeing the pervasive racism sexism homophobia and other forms of oppression would make me sick I wouldn't be able to do it This doesn't bother Jocelyn particularly though especially seeing as the only people of color in her life are the house staff in her back then life and even though they are servants they are like family so it's all goodNow that I'm down off my activist soap box the next pressing issue I had with the story has to do with the premise and the plot Premise There are a group of people who have this special genetic gift I think going magic instead of science fiction would have made sense with this one but I digress that means they live two different lives at two different times They are born unaware of the other life they live until around adulthood when the barriers come down and they can integrate living two lives at oncePlot A young couple in the 1800s are about to get married The man has this gift and when he figures out his fiancee does too even though she has no idea he and his family scramble to find her in their present day lives The reason? If she gets pregnant in her back then life she gets pregnant in her present life Yes pregnancy carries over both lives though illness and injury does not go figure This would cause problems for present life Jocelyn but back then Jocelyn would be irked if her husband didn't want to do it with her once they were marriedYou see my problem? We have this cool magicscience fiction premise and the author uses it to pose the uestion what would you do if you knew getting your life pregnant in one life would royally screw up her other life but still wanted to sleep with her once you were married? Not exactly like the spine chilling mirror of reality uestions that other science fiction novels have sought to shed light onThe last reason why I didn't like this book that I will address in this review is the fact that I don't like Jocelyn and Jackson very muchJocelyn comes off as clingy and disrespectful She rolls her eyes smirks and snickers uite a bit and maybe the author just wasn't paying to the connotation of the words she was using and meant that Jocelyn looks up with amusement smiles coyly and titters a lot As it is though Jocelyn comes off as kind of a bratJackson well for a guy pursuing law in both of his lives he is a bit of an idiot Despite being 22 when he finds out that his 17 initially but turns 18 by book 3 girlfriend lives in present day too not just the 1800s he decides that the best way to re win her heart would be to fake his age and re enroll in high school even though his family moved in across the street from her This of course means he and his family have broken a lot of laws to get him to be near his one true love when a neighborhood barbecue would have done the trick It is because he has these crimes hanging over his head not apparently because he has grown or matured in anyway means he cannot partake in the shenanigans he used to with his buddies Shenanigans that included stealing a bunch of street signs from the road on a drunken stint that caused an accident But it's okay because no one died and Jackson's lawyer daddy covered for him so he and his friends didn't get in trouble Any shred of hope I had for Jackson as a character ended when I read that sceneI recognize I am just one voice with one opinion and there are many people who do like these books but I cannot recommend them I held out hope I've had enough and I will not be continuing with the series April's 5 Star Review 5 Dreams and Screamsuestions uestions and uestions they consume Jocelyn Timmons’ life—both of them uestions that never seem to have an answer They haunt her eat at her and dreams of a normal senior year of high school have finally floated away into nothingnessInheriting the gift of EVE Essence Voyager Era has become both a gift and a curse One that Jocelyn doesn’t know if she wants or can accept The world she once knew and thrived in has all but disappeared in the last two months And now she wonders if she can ever find her way home againHer fiancé Jackson Chandler and his family seem to be the only ones who understand what she’s going through besides her uncles both of which she’s grown very close to But even they do not fully grasp how turbulent the situation at home has become Will Jocelyn survive the torments from her mother and brother? Or will she find a hidden key to finally unlock her golden cage?Okay ask yourself this uestion Can you imagine going through your life as a normal almost eighteen year old teenager starting out your senior year but in just a matter of weeks your entire life and everything you have thought you understood has changed? Well this is how Jocelyn Timmons found herself in In the first 2 books which I hope you have read Jocelyn finds out that she has inherited what is called EVE Essence Voyager Era from her Uncle She finds herself living on two different planes at the same time November 26 2009 while her other life is in the year 1878 Jocelyn has a hard time accepting this in both of her lives Who wouldn’t? I couldn’t do it and I know you couldn’t either but Jocelyn is a strong woman who stands up for herself not only against her mother but her brother and her friends Even though her family isn’t as close as any other family I am glad that she not only has Jackson but Emily and Robert as well and of course her dad but he doesn’t know about the EVE Not only did we get to enjoy their marriage in 1878 but also 2009 I really enjoyed this book and the continuation of Jocelyn and Jackson’s story Jocelyn and Jackson have gone through so much go overcome what they had to deal with I can’t wait to see what is in store for them in the fourth and final book Illumination I really did enjoy it and can’t wait to see what happens next I'm excited there's already book three and I'll get to know of Jocelyn's and Jackson's story The cover is amazing again And there's nice and touching rhyme in the beggining I loved it I enjoyed this story It's hard to put down this book once I started to read it I couldn't stop and so I decided I'll read first and do things I had to do sometime later It's so easy to read I barely noticed the time passing by or how much I have already read I love these characters and I love to read their stories I'm touched by their stories I would like to have love as theirs myselfI like to read about thoughts Jocelyn has about family and successful marriage to see how she grows to an adult and has to make important choices in her life I'm wondering with her how this Eve works having one soul and two lives The idea is intriguing I wonder what if I had an opportunity to live in two different eras how would it go what would it be like how would I deal with it I enjoyed reading about events and interactions between characters Some of it made me think about prejudice people have And how they make decisions based on them How sometimes people are seeing not the people in front of them as they are but the reflection of their fears How cruel can be people who are closest ones to usI still love to read about differences in lifes there and here I think there's plenty to learn from these times Maybe some important parts of life have gone missing through the years passing I haven't thought about it this story keeps giving me things to think about again and again but I would agree what family in ourdays has a much smaller meaning and value than in nineteenth century I guess it's a loss and I'm wondering what it would be like to have a family like one in these years Wonderful book Sweet and beautiful I loved it It was an amazing seuel to amazing series Now I wonder what would happen in book fourI have received this book from the author in exchange for a honest review I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a reviewThis review may contain spoilersHaving read the first two books in this series I was really happy when I was offered the opportunity to read the third book in this series Unfortunately I didn't finish it as soon as I would have liked but I still enjoyed reading it when I was able to startI did feel that part of the first couple of chapters sounded really familiar as if I'd read a couple of those lines in the previous bookI found it really interesting to see the differences in Jocelyn's two lives It was interesting to see that neither of those were perfect realities and that both had their problems The Jocelyn from modern times and the Jocelyn from the past seemed to come across as two different people at times tooI don't agree with the way modern Jocelyn's mother and brother treated her when she chose to get engaged to Jackson but at the same time I can see why they would both be bothered I have seen a couple who got married while one of them was uite young and there are parts of that relationship that didn't seem too healthy Although I could understand and believe in Jocelyn and Jackson's feelings towards each other I could also understand how concerned Jocelyn's friends and family were and I definitely don't think Jackson and his family should have encouraged one of the things they did since it ultimately made things a whole lot worseI found it intriguing how the two Jocelyns slipped into the speech from the other time such as modern Jocelyn becoming formal and past Jocelyn using modern phrasing I also found it interesting to learn about Jackson's past and how he was in his real high schoolIn the past I really felt a lot of sympathy towards Olivia and William I would like to see focus on their relationship particularly given what they had to deal with on top of everything elseI also liked seeing Nicholas and a bit of Sidney I'd be intrigued to see how things continue to develop in the next books in this series Perception starts where the last Eve novel left off The barrier is still lingering but Jocelyn is coming to terms with her new life on two different planes She is still struggling with getting along with her brother and Mom They both seem to think she is nuts for wanting to marry someone at 18 years old can you blame them? but Jocelyn still won't tell them why she's doing it The reader desperately wants to tell her JUST TELL THEM ALREADY since dealing with them thinking she is crazy is happening anyway She finds out some new info about her long lost Uncle Nicholas and also that her sister Sidney may be gifted with Eve as well Both Jackson and Jocelyn are struggling to find a place to live before their wedding in the past until a surprise catches them off guard In present time the pair heads off to Boston and secretly betray Jocelyn's father I won't give away any but dang this girl is really a rebelI really like this series so far but I like I said before I keep wanting Jocelyn to just spill it to her family already We know her parents and friends are going to find her crazy and the drama between her and Jenna is just nuts However this book got a little bit juicier than the others so that kept my interest This series is great for a reader who likes a chit lit book with a little bit of historical fiction as well4 Stars
