I enjoy stories set in the wilderness or small towns surrounded by nature so this one caught my interest right away The author does a great job of letting the reader see and experience the setting in a realistic manner Frank Bennett is a believable character whom you learn to care about and trust Nice complex plot just the way I like 'em Looking forward to the next book in the series This was a uick mystery read I didn’t care for the main character but as this was the first in a series I’m sure his character will continue to develop It was fun reading about the Adirondack setting and the townspeople were interesting although truthfully there was no one I was rooting for Twists and turns Secrets and murder If you like mysteries that keep you guessing characters that have secrets and murders that seem impossible to solve this book should be on your bookshelf Great book Take the Bait written by S W Hubbard and published in 2003 by Simon Schuster Frank Bennett mans the police department in Trout Run New York close by the Adirondack Mountains but that majestic landscape really didn't play much of a part in this story which was a disappointment It could have been set most anywhere The disappearance of a teenager sets the action in motion and several of the inhabitants in the tiny town seem like they could have something to do with it Despite being written in 2003 the feel was of a dime novel or pulp fiction with the Chief often pushing the bounds of propriety Characters were described in a fairly judgmental way which also harkened back to earlier times The mystery was engaging enough to carry me through to the end but the package was unremarkable Frank Bennett is the Police Chief in Trout Run New York He moved to Trout Run after his wife died of cancer and after he is encouraged to retire from the police force due to a “mistake” that he can’t forget Trout Run is a typical small town where everyone knows everybody else’s business Sometimes that is a bad thing and sometimes it is good When Janelle Harvey disappears everyone believes she has been kidnapped No one believes the kidnapper could be anyone from the town Frank is fairly new to Trout Run and therefore he falls into the group in town who is classified as “not born here” The other group is made up of those who were “born here” He had never really thought much about it before but during the investigation it seems to make a difference to some of the people he interviews When the most powerful man in town tries to get Frank’s contract terminated because he doesn’t agree with the way the investigation is going Frank wonders if he shouldn’t just resign and be done with it But can he do it? There is a missing girl who needs his help Plus a swirl of other unusual events going on that needs investigationThis is really an interesting story The investigation takes place very much like a true life police investigation The information gathering and the trial and error scenarios are very real This isn’t a story where the investigator gets one piece of evidence and suddenly knows who committed the crime The author developed the story so that each piece of evidence and each personal interview must be sorted through for nuggets of truth and fiction just like in the day to day investigation of real police work No uick fixes here Just good solid police work The clues are there but it is the digging them out and putting them in the correct place that becomes the exuisite challenge For a first novel this one is superb So far I have really enjoyed everything this author has written I have also read The Lure the second in this series and it's just as good as Take The BaitFrank Bennett is the police chief of a small Adirondack town having moved after making a rather large mistake at his old job He didn't want to retire and figured small town policing would be uneventful and laid back He finds out in a hurry that his ideas about that were very wrongThe characters in this book were a fun mix of the types of people every town has Even the people that weren't very easy to like were wholly fleshed out and very real seeming I could easily picture them all in my headIf you like a good fast paced and interesting mystery definitely read this book I can also highly recommend this author's Palmyrton Estate Sale Mystery series I've read all of those and really like them New Jersey author SW Hubbard begins her Adirondack mystery series with a strong story of a missing teenage girl Did she run away? Was she kidnapped? Did she join a cult? The twists and turns of the plot continue right up to the surprising end of the story Recommended for fans of classic British mysteries and regional American mystery authors For read alikesthe author writes on her websiteMany of my favorite mystery writers come from across the pond PD James Ruth Rendell Colin Dexter RD Wingfield Val McDermid Cynthia Harrod Eagles and those ersatz Brits Elizabeth George and Peter Robinson Of course I’m a fan of many great American writers too Laura Lippman Jess Walter and Lisa Gardner to name just a few Small towns are a hot bed of secrets schemes and evil plans at least Trout Run New York is A young girl disappears and the new police chief has to prove himself and find her But as he starts his investigation he has a strong sense that the girl was not kidnapped like everyone said she was but what really happened to her As Chief Bennett finds out and about Janelle and her past the plot becomes involved and twisted Good story and enough twists that it kept me interested Good mystery What makes a good mystery? Well an ending that you may suspect but you can't tie up all the loose ends until the very end of the book Characters that are truly characters the main character who is uite relatable and throw in some good chuckles also This is the 4th book of this author that I have read and I've enjoyed them all I just bought the 3rd book in this series to read tonight Frank Bennett a small town cop in upstate New York investigates the disappearance of a local girl Good read Loved this book the only negative was a little bad languageChief Frank Bennet has moved to a small town inside the Adirondack State Park hoping to revive his career And yes this small town has all the wonderful ambiance of any typical small town along with all it's drawbacks too especially when Frank is trying to investigate the disappearance of an attractive teenager The friendly townsfolk just won't talkI could hardly put the book down
