I don't love this book because suffering is at the center The back matter is helpful and Pinkney's illustrations are lovely But it lacks a few pages that could feature the joy of Nya's voice once she is healthy and going to school An important story that felt too abrupt However I loved Nya's determination the illustrations and learning about Water for South Sudan This important picture book gives young readers a glimpse into the lives of children a world away who face hardships that are very difficult for people in our culture to imagine This story of love and perseverance has Africa's newest country South Sudan as its setting South Sudan was formed in 2011 after decades of civil war but still faces conflict among the country's two major tribes So many people like Nya and her family face poverty food insecurity a lack of education and health care and extreme violence This companion picture book to Park's middle grade novel A Long Walk to Water tells the story of Nya and her little sister Akeer Nya must walk half a day to get water from a hole and the other half of the day carrying the heavy container back home Nya's village doesn't have clean water nearby When her little sister becomes seriously ill on one of these water trips Nya must summon all of her strength to carry her sister and the water back home to the village A story about the problem of accessible and clean water in Africa A girl and her young sister walk to the water hole When the younger girl gets sick the older sister must carry her and the water back to the village Then the sick sister must be carried two or three days to the clinicAfterword And then what happened? Tells how waterborne diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide for children under 5 Talks about Salva Dut and Water for South Sudan install clean water wells which reduce waterborne illnesses and allow village girls time to go to school When Nya's little sister becomes ill on their walk home from getting water she must find a way to carry both her and the water home This is a powerful message about how to manage what seems to be an overwhelming task just take it a bit at a time I appreciate that this companion book to Linda Sue Park's novel A Long Walk to Water might not be based on real characters it's still full of all kinds of truths As Nya and her younger sister Akeer walk to the water hole to fetch water Akeer becomes sick on the journey back and it's up to Nya to get her back to the village Having to carry both Akeer and the water jerry makes for an arduous trip but Nya makes it back in time for her and her mother to continue the two or three day walk to the clinic This realistic story tells of the hardship of waterborne illness and the efforts to drill for wells in the Sudan Park's picture book companion to A Long Walk to Water also set in South Sudan and featuring the character from the novel This is a companion picture book to the author’s novel A Long Walk to Water It shows the plight of people in the South Sudan as they search for clean and safe water sources within walking distance of their homes The book focuses on Nya and her little sister Akeer The two head out on a two hour walk to get water for their family But today Akeer is not merry and active along the way She drags behind and eventually is revealed to be sick and unable to walk any farther It is a two hour walk back home and Nya has to dump much of the precious water back out to be able to also carry Akeer on her back She finds that even when she thinks she can’t make it all the way back to the village she can take one stepPark’s writing is captivating in picture book format a lovely combination of pared down writing with dramatic content Readers will believe that Akeer is simply going slowly at first until her waterborne illness is revealed The difficult decision to leave just enough water behind to make the walk possible is gut wrenching The long and difficult walk is a gripping series of pages that show human resilience and strength vividlyPinkney’s art is full of movement and lines They twirl around the characters who stand out on the page that has bright sunlight and brown dirt The lines form halos around both of the girls dancing on to mark their path and show the wayA look at the impact of unclean water and the health crisis happening in South Sudan this book also offers solutions Appropriate for ages 4 6 This companion picture book to Park's middle grade novel A Long Walk to Water HMH c2011 brings to life one episode about a trip to the well taken by NyaNya's daily chore is to walk two miles to the water hole and back to retrieve the family's daily water ration This particular day her younger sister Akeer tags along On the trip home with the container full of water Akeer falls ill and can move no Nya pours out over half of the precious water and picks up her sister to carry her home In order to do this Nya sets short goals of 20 yards or so in length resetting her distance goal when she reaches that location until she arrives home with Akeer who can be taken to see the doctorBy telling this story about Nya Park makes this topic approachable for young children It is as much about children's rights and the value of setting short term goals as it is about the lack of access to water Readers will empathize with Nya and root for her to get Akeer home safely Brian Pinkney's colorful swirling lines that show the colors of desert are held in place by bold back outlines of Nya Akeer and their world Printed on a cream color paper the text and illustrations work well togetherUse this when talking about setting short term goals sticking with a task to the end life in South Sudan child labor and access to waterRecommended for PreS grade 5 Linda Sue Park's beautiful book A Long Walk to Water is not for young children so it is wonderful that she has crafted a smaller story with the same poignancy for those younger Of course every age can be transformed with such a message the story of a young girl who walks most of a morning to carry water back to her family And she must take her younger sister along too a tougher walk for a little one Usually though tough it happens day after day but this time little sister Akeer is not all right In fact Nya realizes that Akeer is very sick Now she must carry at least some of the water but Akeer too With grit hard to imagine the journey intensifies in feeling as we readers all want to know what's going to happen Grit taking one step and love shown are inspirations for every reader I wish it could have gone a bit longer to tell what happened with the second long walk they had to get to a doctor There is an added note that tells of Salva Dut the head of an organization digging clean water wells in South Sudan a life saving task for both the village and for girls who now instead of the long walk can go to school Ink and watercolor illustrations by Brian Pinkney evoke the desert settings beautifully as well as the loneliness of these young people on their walk
