Fun Not great, but fun. Volume 2 of Do You Love Your Mom continues with the tropey heroes from our first volume, but introduced a new setting school and new characters the mother who wants her child to be 1 at everything, Medhimama, and her lovely on the surface but bubbling emotion inside child, Medhi It continues to be a parody pastiche of LN genre but at the same time appealing to fans of said genre It s basically like Konosuba The school setting comes about because of the promise of powerful items that Volume 2 of Do You Love Your Mom continues with the tropey heroes from our first volume, but introduced a new setting school and new characters the mother who wants her child to be 1 at everything, Medhimama, and her lovely on the surface but bubbling emotion inside child, Medhi It continues to be a parody pastiche of LN genre but at the same time appealing to fans of said genre It s basically like Konosuba The school setting comes about because of the promise of powerful items that carry benefits the party needs Despite the obvious trap that was likely set up by the admins to get them there, the items are too tempting to pass up, as is the SP boost they are promised for learning And so, our 3 students And their mom, head off to the school town to participate in the week long event There s some quirky stuff about the school, but it basically plays on the tropes of school stories there s gym class poolside monster extermination , school festival set up in one afternoon no less , a class trip, and ultimately the final examination they are seemingly preparing for Even the NPCs are programmed to be your typical students in LN including annoying pervy dude and stern class pres x Medhi is the major new addition She s a beautiful cleric that Masato is instantly smitten with Unfortunately for him, her mother Medhimama seems determined to micromanage her stay at school to make her be the best, to the point of showing up in class and interfering with their day to day routine.Mamako is basically a horror movie monster for the first half, Masato thinking she ll storm into class pretending to be a student in a sailor suit no less just so she doesn t have to be lonely Some of those scenes were hilarious Mamako is not only used as a counter to Medhimama loving accepting vs egotistical but also a source of connection between Masato s pain in the butt mother s qualities and Medhimama s interference.I don t know if Masato s treatment of his mom improved too much, but he at least takes things a bitcalmly on the surface, not underneath where his mind is raging and his hands in his pockets are literally bleeding from how he s clenching his first.Wise was a big punching bag this volume I felt bad for her I hope a future volume lets her get some revenge on Masato The best line was when she did the same routine as Medhi in a beauty contest, and the class didn t respond well to it, and she s like I did the same stupid crap she did You tell them Wise Wise still gets her magic sealed occasionally too, but it doesn t feel as obnoxious as V1 there s a few times where she doesn t directly comment on it, like when she chooses to eat food to seemingly drown in hide her ineptitude.Speaking of repeating jokes, Mamako only uses a few skills in this volume, so there s not as many repeats of them as I feared I figured, in a volume where her son is gawking at a girl his age, she d be interrupting a ton of relationship scenes, but Mamako was pretty reserved here Kind of goes with thehands off let your kid enjoy their life with theme.Porta is Porta Impish girl Gathers up gems like a squirrel Enjoys being with everybody Loves her mommy Mascot like character that keeps everybody together and happy A good sight to see when things are dire I relate to the whole parental induced stress angle of this volume Sometimes, older folks in general just get too obsessed with you being what they want you to be, whether those be high expectations for you or what they see as a safe route lowered realistic expectations I hope Medhi is able to be who she wants to be later in life For this volume at least, we gotta deal with her mom And hopefully Mamako learns a bit too from helping all these mothers with issues that she is slightly guilty here it s obsessiveness over your son s being and a need to always be close I do wonder where we re going from here, specifically whether the cast we have is set or if they are going to keep adding to it And it d be nice to see romance develop later too It continues to frustrate me This content should be laser focused on me but I just hate Masato and his point of view so so much Ugh. Another fan service fueled lesson in parenting Volume 2 had a better overall storyline with a little I mean little less fan service A fun light read. 3 stars rounded down Still, that s quite a jump from the first volume Don t get me wrong, there are still too many awkward Oedipal situations frankly one would be too many but fewer than volume one On the whole I enjoyed the change Masato, Mamako and friends go to school A special school for a week where they can earn SP to raise stats or try to get items And it is a school for the kids Everything should be great, Masato finally has a chance Until, of course, his Mother shows up in un 3 stars rounded down Still, that s quite a jump from the first volume Don t get me wrong, there are still too many awkward Oedipal situations frankly one would be too many but fewer than volume one On the whole I enjoyed the change Masato, Mamako and friends go to school A special school for a week where they can earn SP to raise stats or try to get items And it is a school for the kids Everything should be great, Masato finally has a chance Until, of course, his Mother shows up in uniform, and in a school swimsuit yadda yadda yadda At school he meets Medhi and Medhimama And of course Masato has a crush on Medhi almost immediately.I feel this book really wasabout the Medhi and her mother but seen from the eyes of Masato and party Their adventures hijinks hint atgoing on in the game than expected and I feel allow for grain of growth by Masato and maybe even his mother.Verdtict What I can say most definitely after a very sketchy start, Do You Love Your Mom is a lot better with this volume Had vol 2 been like vol 1 I d never have picked up another Now I might am probably willing to Starting be pretty formulaic, with very thinly veiled commentary about parenting styles somehow turned in to the monster of the volume type of story This volume s focus is about helicopter parents, but it falls pretty flat The lack of character development is pretty telling, as there is barely anything new added on to the recurring cast, while the new characters introduced this volume have paper thin personalities It s definitely very reliant on tropes as a crutch to actually skip telling t Starting be pretty formulaic, with very thinly veiled commentary about parenting styles somehow turned in to the monster of the volume type of story This volume s focus is about helicopter parents, but it falls pretty flat The lack of character development is pretty telling, as there is barely anything new added on to the recurring cast, while the new characters introduced this volume have paper thin personalities It s definitely very reliant on tropes as a crutch to actually skip telling the story and building up the character so the writing is really lazy feeling too There s also a tendency in the writing to randomly refer to game specific terms without actually making it clear what those are, not sure it s the translation s fault or not, but definitely makes some dialogue rather confusing as heck Overall, this vol tends to showcase the worst habits of webnovel writing, so I m really confused as to how this series gets enough hype to have an animation project airing soon I thought the first volume was a little weak but I still picked up volume 2 Fortunately with introductions out of the way I liked this one better I thought the jokes landed better still a lot of mom in fan service situations but alsocharacter based stuff and I kind of like the idea of a healing LN where all mother issues can be easily and safely handled over the course of a breezy 170 or so pages There is a bit of foreshadowing towards an overarching plot too Overall this was a lig I thought the first volume was a little weak but I still picked up volume 2 Fortunately with introductions out of the way I liked this one better I thought the jokes landed better still a lot of mom in fan service situations but alsocharacter based stuff and I kind of like the idea of a healing LN where all mother issues can be easily and safely handled over the course of a breezy 170 or so pages There is a bit of foreshadowing towards an overarching plot too Overall this was a light novel I enjoyed and I ve preordered Volume 3
