The Earl s Christmas Pearl is book 4.5 in the Duke s Daughters series by Megan Frampton I haven t read any of the other books so can happily say that this book can be read as a standalone one.Lady Pearl Howlett feels constricted by society and its rules for women When she finds herself in London, home alone after her parents leave for the country without her think of Kevin in the Home Alone movies she is absolutely thrilled She isn t sure how long she will have until she is missed, but until then she intends to do everything that being a lady prevents her normally from doing Things, like jumping on the beds, skating in the house, and twirling around arms akimbo, come to mind, but she decides her first adventure will be going out on her own for a hot chocolate, or even ale It isn t until evening is upon her and she realises she doesn t even know how to light a fire for warmth, nor does she have food in the house that some of the excitement of being alone wanes She decides to call on her neighbour for some help.Owen Dwyfor, The Earl of Llanover has come to London from Wales to escape his family and to recuperate in peace after hurting himself on his estate there His Godmother isn t in residence so he takes advantage of having her house to himself It just so happens that that house is also the house which Pearl is about to ascend on for help They both have a huge surprise when she knocks on his door.At first, Owen isn t pleased that his solitude has been interrupted but when Pearl explains her circumstances it soon comes to light that she isn t the usual lady of society He is immediately attracted to her and loves how open and honest she is Pearl is equally attracted to him and sees him and treats him unlike anybody else does She wants to help him, she listens to him and doesn t put constant demands on him She is a breath of fresh air They decide to spend time together in his house so that they could help each other at least until Pearl s family arrives for her Christmas is just a day away so they are bound to try to get to her before then.It was wonderful reading how they got on so perfectly together, how they were a balm to each other and when they gave in to their passions it was worthy of reaching for a fan Would those passions lead to a permanent future, or will the couple have to go their separate ways when the time comes This book had a wonderful ending, so you can guess what they decide to do I was definitely in the festive spirit from reading this book, I especially liked how at the start of each chapter the author reworded a section from the 12 Days of Christmas carol to relate to the story I sang each section in my head which made me smile The whole book had a feel good element to it which I loved Sometimes it felt as if the writing was a little modern for the time it was set in, and I also don t believe that Wales ever had Groundhogs But, despite those little negative points I did thoroughly enjoy this book and am happy to recommend it. Series Duke s Daughters 4.5Publication Date 10 29 19Number of Pages 144This is a really quick, lovely, fun Victorian Christmas story It is well written and the characters are relatable and very sweet You can t go wrong with this book if you want a romantic Christmas read.Lady Pearl Howlett is the NOT sister Nobody particularly notices her other than she is NOT the intelligent sister, and she is NOT the scandalous sister, etc Even her mother doesn t really notice her that is how she came to be left alone in London during Christmas Her mother just left her at the townhouse not even noticing that she wasn t in the carriage.Pearl almost ran out after her mother s carriage, but then decided not to do so She thought it would be wonderful to be on her own and have her own adventure After she considered all the things she could do like skating through the hallway she realized that she had no food in the house, no servants, and she didn t know how to do anything for herself She couldn t light a fire, and she couldn t cook even if she did have food So, what is a girl to do Our intrepid Pearl found a way to make it happen.Owen Dwyfor, Earl of Llanover has come to London over Christmas for two reasons one is that he has a leg injury and the doctor is in London and the other is that he just craves some time alone His sisters and his mother make constant demands on him and he d love to have some time for himself He s staying at his Godmother s home, but she has visited other family for Christmas He doesn t have any servants either, but he does have some food and he can build a fire and even cook eggs for himself.Owen and Pearl are staying in homes right next to each other and they meet out on the street where they are staying Their adventure is fun to watch because they are really two kindred spirits designed to complete each other I love that Pearl thinks of Owen as his grumpy earlness It is definitely a light hearted fun read and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book All thoughts and opinions are my own. When she is accidentally left behind at her family s London townhouse during Christmas, Lady Pearl Howlett is thrilled to have some time alone However, as a privileged duke s daughter she doesn t know how to cope with practical matters such as feeding herself, not that there s any food to be found in the closed up house anyway.Owen Dwyfor, the Earl of Llanover, is spending the holiday nursing an injured leg in his godmother s London townhouse He s looking forward to being away from his managing mother and sisters and not being scrutinized for being awkward or grumpy Until his neighbor, Lady Pearl, comes to crash his solitude seeking food Soon the two find themselves snowed in and banding together to conserve resources and it becomes apparent that they have in common than just being alone at Christmas. This was such a cute Christmasy story Yes, it s instalove, but Pearl and Owen have time together with no outside interference, totally unfettered from society s rules, and this enables them to truly be themselves and come to know each other fairly well Owen was adorably gruff and awkward and charmingly caring underneath the irritable exterior It was nice to see him have someone to look out for him for a change and I liked that Pearl was decisive in knowing her own mind and standing up for what she wanted.I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book All thoughts and opinions are my own. Read the review on our blog Nen and Jen 1 2I wasn t sure what to expect from this book but I was pleasantly surprised It was quirky, had an adorable meet cute and the perfect amount of scandal for a historical romance novella I requested this ARC mainly because of the historical setting and Christmas element It s my favourite holiday of the year and I CANNOT WAIT to get my hands on romances like this They add a certain extra cheer to the build up of my fav festive season Yes I m the person who starts decorating in October The Earl s Christmas Pearl was an endearingly sweet story of an awkward, grumpy man and a free spirited young woman in search of independence from the constraints placed upon her life The scandal was positively salacious and kept my full attention This was quite a steamy read but nothing that overtook the whole novel It was a slow burn with witty banter and the inclusion of some hilarious puns I ll definitely give this a re read sometime Blurb A duke s daughter An irrestible earl And an energetic Corgi named Mr Shorty What could you want in a Christmas novella by Megan Frampton It s Christmastime in London, and Lady Pearl Howlett is eagerly ready for the festivities until her family goes off to their country estate accidentally leaving her home alone But she s not dismayed Rather, she s thrilled to do exactly what she wants Unfortunately, this daughter of a duke doesn t know how to do anything. The Earl of Llanover has come to London to take refuge in his godmother s townhouse, free to be as awkward and grumpy as he wants With his pet Corgi, Mr Shorty, for company, Owen Dwyfor is ready for a quiet holiday away from his mother and sisters who would have him married off That is, until his godmother s neighbor, Lady Pearl Howlett comes barging in to his solitude. After some reluctance, the two come together for a joyous and steamy Christmas they won t forget.Characters Lady Pearl Howlett Pearl s enthusiasm for life and trying to accomplish tasks on her own was endearing I couldn t help but support her attempt to live on her own without maids or assistance She d been sheltered her whole life and the stifling nature of it tore at my heart This story made me appreciate how much freedom I have in my life, especially when Pearl s greatest excitement was being able to learn how to cook her own eggs At the age of twenty I m not a good cook AT ALL but I ve finally found someone who shares my same enthusiasm and lack of skill I m so glad she ended up with a man that was respective of her wish to be self sufficient and willing to help her achieve it.Earl of Llanover Owen was a breath of fresh air from the usual scandalous rakes that fill these books He was awkward, shy and grump as all get out His injury was not seen as a weakness nor was it ignored in this story Owen s character was embraced for all of his imperfections and he was no less masculine or capable for it I loved how Frampton was not shy to include a stubbornly grumpy hero that wasn t above letting Pearl gain independence and control He completely stole my heart and made this book go from average to so so charmingly sweet Overall this was a VERY CUTE and FUN read What held my rating back was the fact that the setting was not as well done as it could have been, nor did the story include some elements at the end that I had been waiting the whole book for The characters, their budding love and witty banter were all there though If this had been a full length novel with some added depth including better writing of the setting as well as additional characters it would be a 5 star As these elements can t always be realistically added in to a novella of this length it was understandable and still enjoyable I received an ARC of this book to read through Edelweiss in exchange for a fair review The Earl s Christmas Pearl is a Duke s Daughters series Christmas Novella by Megan Frampton Lady Pearl Howlett was accidentally left behind when her mother left London to spend Christmas at the family seat in the country Alone for the first time in her life Pearl is delighting in the freedom this brings until she realises that being alone also means there is no food in the house Owen Dwyfor, Earl of Llanover has come to London from Wales to seek treatment for an injured leg and is spending Christmas next door to Pearl at his godmothers home He too is delighted to be alone and enjoying the peace and solitude when Pearl comes knocking on his door seeking sustenance They share a lovely Christmas adventure complete with the joy of knowing became less grumpy as he spent time with Pearl Pearl was a joy I loved how she came out of the shell when she could be herself I also loved how they really saw came to know each other My only quibble was that we don t have groundhogs in the UK My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read The last Howlett sister gets her HEA in this short story after Pearl, who feels that she is the not sister not the loudest, not the prettiest, etc , manages to be left home alone She rightly determines that if she just lingers long enough during Christmas shopping, her mother won t notice that she s not in the carriage While she s initially jubilant, she soon realizes that she might not have thought of some problems in her quest to be alone No servants means she doesn t know where things, like her cloak, are And she doesn t know how to cook and therefore is hungry Luckily, there is a gentleman staying at Lady Robinson s next door.Owen Dwyfor, the Earl of Llanover, is in London to have specialists look at his leg, which he twisted while shearing one of his sheep And to get away from his overly involved family He doesn t expect to fall in love with the girl next door but the two are allowed to spend some time together, without social niceties, and figure out that they could spend a lifetime together.
