repercussions i.e., me grumping around on Goodreads complaining in 1,000 words about why a book was so grump inducing.Every single character in this book is a butt.Normally I like to flatter myself that I have a way with words, meaning I write at a level just above that of a fifth grader, but to be honest I lack the energy or motivation to find a better way to describe the characters in this They don t deserve it They are immature and they re the worst and a fitting punishment is that I will refer to them exclusively as insults from the mind of your average ten year old.Our main character, Evie, is a buttface She is in her 384738297th year of a job where she is harassed, manipulated, overworked, and disrespected She is a bad friend, a total doormat, and a straight up fool She has no ambitions or cunning and she f cks everyone in her life over but somehow manages to STILL not stand up for herself.Previous to this reading experience I was unaware that it was possible to be horrible to everyone around you and still not stand up for anything you believe in, but I have been enlightened.Evie s job throughout this book is to help Ezra, a famous screenwriter, write a rom com script by enlisting herself in a series of meet cutes. For some reason, she takes it upon herself to present these to him in the form ofscenes Pre formatted, already edited, well written scenes Ready to be copy and pasted into a screenplay. If you see where this is going, take my advice Do not make my mistakes Do not convince yourself that there s no way that something so blatantly obvious and dumb could be the actual plot Because, for context, everything that Evie doesn t realize throughout this whole thing is made abundantly clear to the reader. But anyway, back to Ezra.Ezra is a butthole who is obviously a butthole from the start Sometimes Evie has these inexplicable scenes where she ll make heart eyes at him because he s hot, but they never make sense and they come from nowhere and the author doesn t try all that hard to make us buy into them. But really the butthole thing is all I have to say about Ezra.Evie s boss, Monty, who is the one with Ezra s heroic assistance doing the harassing and manipulating and disrespecting, is the worst kind of MeToo able boss character It s justI mean, read the room, author Seriously Who wants to read about this Who wants to treat a bumbling sh tty man as redeemable solely because he has power in 2020 All of which is to say Monty is a butthead. And Ben, a single dad who has the misfortune of being a regular at the coffee shop where Evie often shows up to do her daily buttface ing, is a personality less doormat too, so I guess he and Evie have something in common I ran out of butt related insults, which is fine, because Ben is nothing He neither deserves nor doesn t deserve a butt themed moniker I justdid not like this at all I hated a lot, and everything I didn t hate was bland.Bottom line A butt book it s actually a good sign for how my brain is doing when i m only capable of reading romance definitely not a cry for help that every single book i read has to have a happily ever after this story produces so much cheese, germany my actual review of this book, I just want to say that this has all the ingredients for a perfectly unrealistic Netflix romcom that would be a complete hit All the while I was reading this, I could just imagine it going from page to screen So, this was actually really enjoyable I thought it was cute and inherently light enough to make me fly through it inor less a couple days I think it s perfect that this book is set to release in the month of December because it would be such a fluffy Christmas time, Holiday esque read even though it has nothing to do with either There is a passing christmas scene, and that s pretty much it But, it s the atmosphere that had me reading this and gobbling it up like chocolate It truly felt like a silly, insanely dramatized romantic comedy that you would see on the big screen It was comical and didn t take itself too seriously, so I will definitely be reading this author againNo, she is not okay For sodding s sake, Janet, pass me a moist toweletteRachel Winters delivers a really fun, hilarious and event packed book that had me loving Evie Summers by the minute Evie has to recreate a bunch of famous meet cutes in order to keep her job So begins a classic tale of awkward moments, adorable side characters, class A dialogue and love interests that had going from cringes to smiles The humor in this was very tongue in cheek and so many bizzare things ended up happening Evie stayed true to herself from start to finish, and I loved seeing a female lead that didn t have that damsel in distress characteristic that most romcoms lean towards While I found it really addictive, there were some elements that I struggled with Notably, there were A LOT of cliches in this book From the gay best friend to the group of girls as support and even the single hot dad which isn t to say that I didn t love Annette she had my heart and soul The ending was unique and although I didn t see it coming, some scenes lacked the bravado that I enjoyed during the first half of the book The magic slowly simmered down towards the end, and everything felt fragmented and rushed Yet, this is not to say that I didn t really like the lesson this book teaches, I did I found the message behind this book deeper than it let on and I wasn t expecting that at all view spoiler The main thing that ended up making this 3 stars was the fact that I found both the main love interests to be manipulative and unkind at times While I loved Evie, I hated Ezra and began to be irritated with Ben towards the end hide spoiler This was ADORABLE. years, though, it seemed to go out of fashion, but now it s back with a vengeance and I m so glad especially since a lot of therecent offerings are muchempowering than some of the overworked underpaid self hating women characters that graced many a page in the early noughties, along with way too many cocktail drinks and a ring of supportive girlfriends including sigh the obligatory gay bff My, how far we ve come On the surface, WOULD LIKE TO MEET is pretty similar to its early noughtiess forebears Evie is overworked and underpaid She works as an assistant to an ungrateful and comically incompetent agent and his childish and irresponsible author, Ezra, who Evie has nicknamed N.O.B number one boychild She has a supportive group of girlfriends, including, sigh the obligatory gay bff, and there are several scenes involving cocktails, something called a hen do which I guess is a bachelorette party in Brit speak , and, of course, a wedding What sets this book aside from the rest is a little something called self awareness The concept really allows the book to wink at the audience while acknowledging certain tropes as toxic You see, Ezra N.O.B is supposed to write a rom com, and Evie s totally chaotic dating life has inspired him if she sends him IRL meet cutes to prove that love at first sight is real, he will agree to work in earnest and stop flaking Evie agrees and proceeds to copy the oh so quirky and oh so coincidental meet cutes from various famous rom coms, with disastrous results.Evie s group of friends isdeveloped than a lot of the cast of friends I ve read about historically Each of them have their own personalities, and they call Evie out when she acts irresponsibly something that will appeal to readers frustrated with authors like Sophie Kinsella, whose heroines act in super psychologically dysfunctional ways and are never called out on it in earnest And her gay BFF actually gets to have a personality and problems of his own, and isn t reduced to a stereotype So you know what, okay book, I see you I also adored one of the friends she makes at a soured meet cute that involves spilled protein drink and projectile vomiting Ben and his young daughter Annette are great characters, and end up becoming the peanut gallery at many of Evie s ill conceived schemes, as well as her biggest cheerleaders when the going gets rough.I ll be the first to admit that the concept is totally outlandish and not at all plausible, but it was so much fun I didn t care It s been a while since I read a romance that told me it would be a total laff riot note not the actual words and ACTUALLY DELIVERED I laughed so many times while reading this book I actually started cackling in the middle of the night at 3AM and then had to try to calm myself down while looking around guiltily to make sure I hadn t woken anyone else up Evie is such a great character and you find yourself buying into her adventures, while rooting for her to find success and or a happy ending It s never completely obvious who she s going to end up with, and the author deliciously turns a lot of tropes on their heads in her attempt to show that a happy ending isn t always enough if you don t feel validated for being who you are and doing what you love. This is one of the best chicklit books I ve read recently and I can t wait for you all to read it, too Thanks to the is what Evie wants to find out NO, she needs to find this out to convince a screenwriter to follow through and write that ROMCOM her has been paid to write Evie has been an assistant for far too long It s almost a joke heck it is a joke amongst her peers So, she attempts to fall in love through various meet cute situations. Here friends are there to help and their back and forth banter can be read Evie has also befriended a father daughter duo, Ben and Annette who have witnessed a meet cute gone bad Can Evie meet the man of her dreams, convince a screenwriter to write that movie already, save her job and save her dignity This was a fun rom com that follows Evie as she attempts to have meet cutes inspired by famous Hollywood Movies and see if they work in real life It was nice to see Evie grow as a person and get to know Ben and Annette better Little Annette stole the show, or shall I say book for me This is a light fun book There are no steamy or gratuitous scenes so most readers will find this book enjoyable It s predictable but that took nothing away from my enjoyment This is a great book to turn to when you want a lighter read I also like that the characters in this book are dealing with real life issues such as grief, hearing issues, single parenthood, dating, etc I m teetering on a 3.25 3.5 rating for this Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss who provided me with a second hand embarrassment and laughs Evie literally took meet cutes from famous romcoms and recreated them to see if they would work in real life, with pretty hilarious results It had every romcom clich in, and plenty of OMG moments Evie was a bit of a disaster, and I couldn t help but like her and laugh along at her antics, even if they were highly unrealistic and unbelievable You kind of just have to go with the flow with this dramatic story Some of the situations she got herself intoI liked Evie s friendship group, who had been friends for years, but were all in different stages of their lives, as well as different parts of the country Even though her friends included the typical gay bf included in romcoms, her friendships felt real, and I did relate to what they were going through It is so hard to maintain old friendships when you live far away, have busy jobs and or children, and my old school friends and I also use a group chat to keep in touch like they did here with hilarious results I liked how her friends had their own things going on, and that they called her out on some of her ridiculous behaviour because that is what real friends do Evie was definitely not the greatest friend in thisbut she did realise this, so I couldn t help liking her and rooting for her Saying that, I did really feel for Sarah, I mean Evie certainly made an impact on her friend s hen do and wedding I liked that this had a positive message on self discovery and self worth, as well as the inclusion of a deaf girl I appreciated the discussions on dealing with the loss of a loved one, and how different people grieve too, and I thought this was done well I also get really excited when a book is set in the UK, and I know the places that they talk about, in this case London and Sheffield This book wasn t that heavy on British slang I don t think, but FYI a hen do is a bachelorette party I did like Ben and Anette, a man and his daughter, whom Evie befriends in a coffee shop They supported her when she needed it, and were generally really cute I did however have a problem with Anette s age This isn t the first or last time I will have mentioned this, but it really irks me when a child is written older than they are Anette was meant to be 7I have a year old, teach plenty of them, and have spent time around my 7 year old s friends This character was far too self aware, mature and wise I thought she came across as about 12 13 at the very least When she was revealed to be 7, I was like wtf No one else has mentioned this in their reviews, so it s obviously just a me thing, but it really bugged me As I said, this was a lot of fun It was definitelychick lit than romance though It was actually very light on romance and there were no steamy scenes unless you count Jane, Evie s flatmate parading her lover and leaving vibrators in the dishwasher and bathroom It was sweet, and reminds me of the chick lit I used to read when I was younger I can definitely imagine this as a film. However, the plot was quite predictable to me in terms of both the plot and the love interest, and I felt that all of the drama did overshadow the romance part of this It wasn t the main part of this book, and I wasn t really invested in it There wasn t much chemistry at all, and it felt a little flat This was a definite 3 star read for me, because although it was hilarious, and I enjoyed it, it just didn t have that extra something that I needed If you re looking for a funny, light and really entertaining read though, and are a fan of Sophie Kinsella type chick lit, then you should definitely read this Many thanks to Edelweiss for making this available as a download i love this cover because the girl is obviously a cynical b tch in the best possible way Goodreads Blog
