This is one of those novels that is so well written that the reader is absolutely convinced that they know these characters, that they have met them or live close by them Even though this is historical romance fiction set in the time of the Civil War, it reads like a history book It is also an introduction to two of President Lincoln s group of undercover agents who are trying to keep down the corruption and graft that inevitably grows up so easily within the context of any war But both the This is one of those novels that is so well written that the reader is absolutely convinced that they know these characters, that they have met them or live close by them Even though this is historical romance fiction set in the time of the Civil War, it reads like a history book It is also an introduction to two of President Lincoln s group of undercover agents who are trying to keep down the corruption and graft that inevitably grows up so easily within the context of any war But both these agents Cutter Raines and Billy Marlowe have lost significant parts of their inner beings in the war They are simply going through the motions, trying to serve a cause they believe in, but hoping against hope that somehow they will encounter someone who can give them a good reason for living Enter Jessie McGee, a war widow who had been married only two weeks when her farmer husband went off to fight for the Union and was killed at the battle of Shiloh Curiously, Cutter Raines remembered him Cutter is actually a field surgeon who couldn t take the constant flow of wounded after a while Jessie is trying to rescue five slaves who had lived in her home with her father and stepmother before her marriage, and now with her father s untimely death have been shipped off to parts unknown, totally against her father s will which had provided for their freedom Jessie meets Cutter and Billy and tries to hire them to help her track down these people, little realizing that her enemy, a former suitor, had hired them to capture her Actually Cutter and Billy were working undercover as bounty hunters so readily allowed themselves to be hired by Nathaniel Prentice in order to get inside his organization Nathaniel lusted after Jessie and was willing to take her hostage just to get her, hoping that imprisonment and abuse would break her spirit Little did Nathaniel or even Jessie herself realize that Cutter and Billy would begin to work with Jessie but the price to be paid was to endanger their hearts and the connection with Jessie awakened feelings they weren t sure they wanted to feel ever again This is quite honestly a wonderful book beautifully crafted writing, delightful and unique characters, an inside look at the realities surrounding the Underground Railroad which Jessie was involved in as a keeper of a way station , the deep prejudices and beliefs that divided the United States at the time, and the horror of slavery as it impacted single families This is one of the best stories I have read in recent weeks and while it is a romance through and through, there is suspense, murder, mayhem, some very tense moments when people are gravely injured as they are making a break for freedom, and the deep loyalty of a small Kentucky woman to her family and her friends, without regard to whether they were slave or free This is really about the capacity of one woman s heart to grow large enough to envelope and energize everyone who comes into her life It was to be a wonderful lesson for Cutter and Billy One terrific read
