Liuid City by Curtis J Hopfenbeck is the best fiction I've read in years Finally a book that is smart funny and highly entertaining; with a greathappy ending that makes you excited for his next release in the series Best book of 2010 and probably the next great writer of our time Absolutely loved it In a word? Exceptional I received this book from friends for my 50th birthday and it was the best literary present ever The Liuid City by Curtis J Hopfenbeck is funny tough and smart I'm assuming that someone would have to be innately devoid of those attributes not to enjoy it immensely I'd been looking for someone to replace Robert Parker's 'Spenser' character and Hopfenbeck's 'Shadoe' is the perfect replacement My wife read it and fell in love with the wit charm and romance She's a huge fan of Evanovich and she's thrilled to have another literary life to follow and look forward to I'd read all the international reviews saying that Curtis J Hopfenbeck is the next great American humorist and where G named his book one of The 5 Best Books of the Year but until I actually sat down with it I had my doubts that a new author could be this extraordinary My educated guess is that in order to appreciate this book to it's fullest you need a high intellect andor a great sense of humor otherwise the subtle genius behind his writing will be lost on you Can't wait for the series to move forward and for the inevitable big screen debut? I hate to agree with all by literary friends but this was a great read I received The Liuid City by Curtis J Hopfenbeck as a Christmas gift along with 8 other novels and absolutely fell in love with it I was going to just page through it to see what it was about and before I new it I was a hundred pages into it I couldn't put it down I ended up staying up late that night to finish it and was absolutely crushed to have it end It was great fun Smart witty suspenseful; and with just enough humanity and self deprecation to really enjoy all the characters I'm sure the snobs and pseudo intellectuals will take umbrage at his character's cockiness and lethality as well as the author's abundant use of alliteration but you can tell the author is just having fun with the readers and taking them on a linguistic roller coasterloved it I'd heard his vocabularly was a little advanced for the average reader but I found it no escalated that most of the other top novels on the market It's funny that people with limited vocabularies assume those with advance vocabularies are manufactured Readers should want to be challanged in both language and subject matter it's how we learn and become better readers I personaly loved every minute of it and though it was not Shakespeare or Hemmingway it was the most fun I'd had reading a book in years which I'm sure was Hopfenbeck's intent The Liuid City is smart tough and funny; just like the charachters I found this book to be a great read I spent part of an evening and all of the next day reading it The verbiage was excellent It was so enjoyable to read a book that didn't talk down to the reader but used the words and phrasing that stretched the mind and tickled the funny bone I loved Shadoe's humurous putdowns and satirical way of talking I also liked that he could poke fun at himself True to life this character was both kind and brutal The story was believable and was the second book I had read this year that talked about the tunnels under Seattle that were left after the wharf was destroyed by fire in the 1800's I know that many many cities have these areas underground that feed the human detritus and the machiavellian plans of evil people and organizations I liked the way that Shadoe took pains to make sure that his crew was safe and that anyone he was able to rescue from the many criminal paths he encountered were given care and offered positions whether with his organization or with someone else making it probable that they would not return to a life of crime I found it interesting that Shadoe had such detailed and moral rules to test a case of retribution before initiating it I do hope that there will be books in the series I wish to thank Michelle Taney of MediaGuests wwwmediaguestsnet for the opportunity to review this book The opinions expressed are mine and I was not paid nor did I promise any kind of review Now I'm mad at all of you I loved it too much I bought The Liuid City by Curtis J Hopfenbeck upon your recommendaton earlier in the week so that I would have a 'feel good funny' book to read with my husband over our Labor Day vacaton but once I started I couldn't put it down Now I have to head back to Barnes and Noble to pick up something that will probably be nowhere near as fun and funny I adore both Shad and Kathryn and the other wonderful cast of characters The dialogue is hilarious and the relationships are soooo touching It seems so many books today are about death loss grief fantasy etc; so I'm thrilled that another humorist has emerged and that it will be a continuing series The gift of humor and laughter is so rare any especially clean humor and it was catharctic when my husband realized at the end of the book that there was no sex no expletives and no graphic violence; and you never even notice I know they say that humor is the most difficult aspect to write but it is beautifully interwoven here without being too distracting from the action and romance I heard my husband telling his friends that it was a great 'guy' book and I'd just got done telling my girlfriends it was a great 'chick' book o It was so much fun everyone thanks for the great recommend please keep them coming I'm a GoodReads client for life now In a world devoid of love and laughter I found this to be a splendid rendition of what good writing is all about The Liuid City by Curtis J Hopfenbeck was an absolute treasure of a find I had seen it on all the 'Must Read' and 'Best Light Fiction' lists and decided I would give it a shot at our book boutiues and it has become one of our best sellers I recommend this book highly to all our clients who are looking for great light fiction especially along the detectivemystery genre I was surprised at how dextrous Hopfenbeck's wit could be as he tackled issues both simple and salacious After reading some of the comments here I was also surprised to hear some readers had problems with the vocabulary My guess is that these are not avid readers for I found the vocabulary to be eual to any book of literary merit on our shelves To suspect Hopfenbeck of using a Thesaurus illuminates the readers laziness or lack of education Rarely does a book illustrate such mastery of wit and intellect combined with brutality and humanity For anyone hitting the beach or hopping on a plane or just want to laugh and lament The Liuid City is the perfect destination written by probably the top new author on the market today Thanks to all you readers around the world for your continued support Where do I start? This book is awful It's not that the writing is bad it's just not good You get the feeling that the author is as full of himself as the main character The jokes are not only not funny they are lame The minority characters representation in speech is cringe worthy As soon as I opened the box and saw how cheap the cover looksI knew I was in trouble I am now convinved that the rave positive reviews of this book were written by family members of the author I found these rave reviews okay there were only six reviews total on a site where Hunger Games was also listed as a favorite Hunger Games is a great book To add insult to injury I choose The Liuid City for a book club because I was trying to be clever and find something fab that no one had heard ofwhat a mistake I actually went out last night and bought a GOOD book at my own cost and delivered it to all the people in my book club who had to waste money and precious life minutes reading this awful book Now THAT is a great book The Liuid City by Curtis J Hopfenbeck was so funny I almost choked on my sandwich I heard about it from some friends in Europe who saw that it was ranked number in G Magazine for The 5 Best Books of 2010 and couldn't agree I didn't know what to expect since I hadn't heard of him before but it was soooo good I read it front to back in two days I've read it twice since and I appeciate it all the because I have a better sense of his intellect and humor now I used to read a lot of Robert Parker and loved Spenser and Hawk but this far raw and funny If you love buddy movies like 48 Hours and Lethal Weapon andor the whole funny tough smart saracastic detective stories then you'll absolutely love this I Googled his name The Liuid City was named as one of The Top 10 Books You Must Read In 2011 Another well deserved honor and another reason why he's considered the next great American humorist Now THAT is a great book The Liuid City by Curtis J Hopfenbeck was so funny I almost choked on my sandwich I heard about it from some friends in Europe who saw that it was ranked number in G Magazine for The 5 Best Books of 2010 and couldn't agree I didn't know what to expect since I hadn't heard of him before but it was soooo good I read it front to back in two days I've read it twice since and I appeciate it all the because I have a better sense of his intellect and humor now I used to read a lot of Robert Parker and loved Spenser and Hawk but this far raw and funny If you love buddy movies like 48 Hours and Lethal Weapon andor the whole funny tough smart saracastic detective stories then you'll absolutely love this I Googled his name The Liuid City was named as one of The Top 10 Books You Must Read In 2011 Another well deserved honor and another reason why he's considered the next great American humorist Being a former New York Times book reviewer myself I have been the biggest critic about the modern literary output by today's so called authors There are the established greats of course that grace the shelves currently but this is the first time in almost a decade that a true master humorist fiction writer 'of merit' has arrived on the scene The Liuid City by Hopfenbeck is a modern day marvel; not only is he intelligent and touching in his delivery but his witty repartee and humorous dialogue absolutely had me in stitches I don't know when I've laughed so loud or so often And what astounded me was that as a man who admittedly lacks much sentiment that I was brought to the brink of tears twiceno easy task that If I was still in the position to grant literary awards this would get my highest commendation
