This was a muchabstract collection than I am used to by Heaney The poems about his mother s passing werein tune with his established style, they were moving and brilliantly executed they make up about a third of the collection I had mixed feelings about the other poems, some were abs
This little book took me a long time to read, because I had to read every poem at least twice And now I m a better person for it When I need to remind myself of God s love, it s the fact Seamus Heaney was with us for so long. As I make my way through Heaney s poetry, one of thefascinating aspects is seeing how consistently he seeks to portray Ireland, its landscapes and people, while making subtle shifts in the poetry styles he uses to convey these ideas Some of these styles work better for me than others In this collection, I really only loved one third of the poems, but clearances, a series of sonnets dedicated to his mother after her passing were, for me, absolutely one of the highlights of all of Heaney As I make my way through Heaney s poetry, one of thefascinating aspects is seeing how consistently he seeks to portray Ireland, its landscapes and people, while making subtle shifts in the poetry styles he uses to convey these ideas Some of these styles work better for me than othe

Usually, I find Seamus Heaney s work to be very interesting but this collection did nothing for me at all. Many poems are difficult because they relate personal experiences, make classical references, or something else I find myself wondering how to connect the topics within one poem For example, the title poem starts in winter by describing the red, elongated fruit of the hawthorne, introduces lantern light and personal traits, then the ghost like Diogenes, the dog like philosopher whose statue in his hometown holds a lantern Images of haw hawthorne, of wick of self respect as a metaphor, of the Many poems are difficult because they relate personal experiences, make classical references, or something else I find myself wondering how to connect the topics within one poem For example, the title poem starts in winter by describing the red, elongated fruit of the hawthorne, introduces lantern light and personal traits, then the ghost like Diogenes, the dog like philosopher whose statue in his hometown holds a lantern Images of haw hawthorne, of wick of self respect as a metaphor, of the Cynic philosopher Diogenes who appears and scrutinizes the poet All plant, self, and Diogenes beliefs are not easy knowledge I m guessing that the poet makes a revelation about himself that is connected with Diogenes One of the many traits it can be is persistence, as in the final lines of another poem in Haw Lantern, From the Canton of Expectation I yearn for hammerblows on clinkered plan

Too advanced for me to really get a lot from, but I enjoyed this work I read that this collection isabstract than most of Heaney s work, and I did catch that and quite enjoy abstract poetry, and poetry about death and loss, which is primar
